What is Iaido?

Iaido is the way of drawing the sword. It is an art that dates back at least 450 years, towards the end of the period of civil strife in Japan, developed for the purpose of defending one self against unwarranted attacks, especially in civilian life.

In Iaido, practitioners learn to use the katana to forestall or counter another similarly armed opponent(s). For practice purposes, we use bokuto or non-sharpened iaito.

As with many other forms of "Do", the central integral part of Iaido practice focuses on tempering the practitioner's patience through rigourous, detailed practice; being calm in the face of conflict; and seeking victory without drawing the sword.

The Ryuha We Practice

We practice Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū (無雙直傳英信流), one lineage of iaido, a koryū sword art, and one of the most widely practiced schools of Iaido in the world.

Today, Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū is practiced by two to three thousand people in Japan, and has exponents around the world. Iaido is an authentic martial art that proved its martial values in a time of constant battle and warfare, that was preserved and passed on directly from teacher to student over generations in an unbroken lineage for 450 years.

There are many styles or lineages in iaido. Our lineage of iaido is called Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū (無雙直傳英信流), a lineage that traces its history to the founding father of Iai, Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu.
